Sports in brief

Men's Basketball

The Lobos (13-10, 4-6) dropped their 24-straight road game Saturday in Provo, Utah against BYU (17-7, 7-4).

The Cougars dominated play in the paint en route to an 88-71 Mountain West Conference win. Troy DeVries led the Lobos with 16 points, and Javin Tindall added 12.

Next up for UNM are the Utah Utes (19-7, 7-4), as the Lobos try to end their road woes. Utah is 14-1 at home this season.

Swimming and Diving

The women's swimming and diving team placed fifth at the Mountain West Conference Championships on Saturday in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Diver Becca Barras won her second and third-career conference title, taking home the gold in the platform and 1-meter dive. Tracy Berghian also had an impressive performance in the platform, taking second.

Sophomore swimmer Robyn Miller finished second on the 200 fly with a time of 2:04.93, one-hundredth of a second short of a UNM record.

Barras and Berghian will return to Oklahoma City for the Diving Zones meet March 11-12.

Skiing

UNM finished third in the Laura Sharp Flood Memorial on Saturday.

The men's Alpine team placed three skiers in the top-10 of the slalom event. Freshmen Peter Roering, Lars Loeseth and Alex Mach finished second, sixth and seventh, respectively.

The women also notched a pair of top-10s in the slalom with senior Jennifer Delich and sophomore Kathrin Spendier finishing fifth and sixth.

Sophomore Geir Endre-Rogn led the Nordic team with a ninth-place finish in the 15k freestyle. Junior Martina Stursova and sophomore Trine Lundamo placed sixth and eighth in the women's 10k. Next up for the skiers is the NCAA Regional Championships in Crested Butte, Colo. on Feb. 27.

Women's Tennis

The Lobos brought home a couple of impressive victories over ranked teams this weekend.

UNM improved to 4-2 on the season with a 5-2 win over No. 28 Oklahoma in Oklahoma City on Friday. Maja Kovacek, Tiffany Robertson, Michelle Heidbrink and Tjasa Suvak all garnered singles wins against the Sooners. The teams of Kovacek and Sandy Lukowski and Iva Gersic and Maria Ruiz-Fabrega picked up doubles wins.

Sunday against No. 49 Tulsa, the Lobos were equally impressive. Kovacek, Robertson, Heidbrink and Suvak continued their winning ways in singles against the Golden Hurricane. UNM swept the doubles matches as well for a comprehensive 5-2 win.

The Lobos return to their home court Saturday to face Wisconsin at noon.

Softball

UNM had a strong outing at the Texas/Betlin Round-Up in Denton, Texas this weekend.

On Friday, junior Ashley Perkins threw a complete game shutout for the Lobos against Southwest Missouri State. She struck out 11 and gave up a paltry three hits in the win. In the nightcap on Friday senior Amy Dumas nearly matched Perkins' feat but UNM lost a heartbreaker in eight innings to Texas-Arlington 2-1. Dumas pitched all eight innings and struck out eight while allowing five hits.

Perkins and the Lobos bounced back from the tough loss on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Wichita State. Perkins again gave up only three hits and struck out five.
