Lobos prep for top-ranked team

The Lobos will look to continue their phenomenal play this weekend when they head to Las Vegas, Nev., to take on the UNLV Rebels.

The Rebels are in first place in the Mountain West Conference, entering the series with an 11-3 conference record. The Lobos hope to change that as they stand at 11-4 - good enough for second.

UNLV is ranked 35th in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll, but the unranked Lobos are the more compelling of the two teams considering the way they have been playing in recent games.

Sweeping the three games against Air Force last weekend, UNM exploded with 59 runs, 63 hits and 17 homers. Saturday's final score was UNM 31, AFA 11. They set school records, including most runs scored in a game, most RBIs in one game (28), most hits, most total bases (53) and most home runs in one game (8).

Also part of that series' fallout was the naming of freshman first baseman Daniel Stovall as National Co-Hitter of the Week.

Of all the great Lobo performances, Stovall stands out the most. Stovall batted .800 (12 for 15) in the three games with three homers and three doubles for a 1.600 slugging percentage. He also had seven RBIs.

But the Lobos' stellar play hasn't come only at the expense of winless Air Force. UNM has won nine of its last 12 games overall, and eight of the last nine in the MWC.

In their last home series, the Lobos swept Brigham Young and have since lost one of three at Utah and two at Nebraska.

UNM faces a daunting foe in UNLV. Last year's MWC champs have been equally impressive in 2004. The Rebels are overwhelmingly the conference leaders in batting average (.328), runs scored (371), hits (452), doubles, RBIs and slugging percentage.

The Lobos, however, have hit the most home runs of any team in the conference with 43.

The Rebels have a nice conference streak of their own going - they've won their last four conference games.

In particular the Lobos will have to stymie the sensational play of Rebel senior shortstop Peter White, who is hitting a remarkable .516 in conference games this year. It will be up to Lobo starters Jason Fernandez, Danny-Ray Herrera and Cooper Eddy to slow UNLV's dominant offense.

The series between the Lobos and the Rebels will get under way tonight at 6:30 in Las Vegas, Nev.
