Women's Tennis
The season is finally over for UNM tennis doubles pair Sandy Lukowski and Maja Kovacek.
The pair lost to the Marshall University duo of Jessica Johnson and Ashley Kroh in the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Tournament on Friday in Athens, Ga. Lukowski and Kovacek won the first set 6-3, but the Marshall pair won the second set 6-3 and the third set 7-5. The loss was the Lobo team's first match in the tournament to go to three sets.
The two defeated the No. 4 seeded University of Arizona pair, the Texas A&M team and the No. 8 seeded University of Washington team on their way to the semifinals. Lukowski and Kovacek were the first UNM women's doubles pair to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Championships.
Lukowski and Kovocek finished their season with a 33-8 record and gained the All-American title. They end the season ranked No. 8 in the nation.

Junior Matt Gonzales broke UNM's 5,000-meter record Sunday at the Payton Jordan U.S. Open.
His time of 13:35:59 - 3.59 seconds under the previous UNM record set in 1986 - earned him eighth place at the U.S. Open. Gonzales also beat his previous career best and now holds the fifth-best time from a college student this year. He pulled out of the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships to run in the U.S. Open.
He has qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships this year, as well as the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials.
In the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, senior Mark Johnson tied for ninth in the men's pole vault.
Johnson had a personal best of 16-05.25. He is ranked No. 23 in the nation in the decathlon.
Also at the regional competition, junior Amanda Barnes finished ninth in the shot put, despite winning the Mountain West Conference title earlier in May. She had a mark of 48-10.75 on her first attempt, but fouled her other throws.
In the javelin, junior Veronica Gonzales finished 13th and freshman Kayla Brown placed 21st. Senior Jason Barkemeyer ended his Lobo discus career at the regional championships with a 27th-place finish.
Baseball
The UNM baseball team's run in the Mount West Conference Tournament ended with a loss Friday in the semifinals to San Diego State University 24-8.
The second-seeded Lobos, who finished the season with a 26-29-1 record, had 18 hits against San Diego State.
UNM had set a Mountain West Conference Tournament record of 23 runs against Air Force the day before, but San Diego State set a new one in the Lobos' semifinal loss.
Women's Golf
The UNM women's golf team tied for 15th place at last week's NCAA Championships.
The team finished with a score of 304-292-304-297 - 1197 (+45). Sophomore Christine Fernandez had the best results on the last day of the tournament. She carded a 1-under 71. She finished overall at 7-over with a score of 79-73-72-71 - 293.
This year the Lobos made their 12th appearance at the NCAA Championships. The team was seeded fourth, the highest ranking in UNM history.
The team, which was ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation, won four tournaments in the 2003-04 season. Four Lobos received All-Mountain West honors.
