Lobo scrimmage thrills fans

Football players put on a show for the faithful

Football fans got their first look at this season's Lobo team during Saturday night's Fan Photo Day. Lobo devotees were treated to two hours of practice and scrimmage and an autograph session with the players.

"This is a good event for the players and fans," media director Greg Remington said. "It gives fans a chance to interact with the team. It's nice for them to see the players without their helmets on for a change."

Highlights of the scrimmage included colossal kickoffs from kicker Kenny Byrd, who sent the ball sailing to the back of the endzone.

A little later in the kicking drills, Tyler Gaus showed off his punting skills with a boot secured by special teams at the one-yard line.

The first team offense and defense also matched up. Some fans, such as lifetime Lobo Henry Dodson, had waited all summer to watch Lobo football.

"I was really happy to come watch them practice," Dodson said. "I wanted to see DonTrell make some runs."

Moore was solid for the fans, with strong gains against the defense before being spelled by backup D.D. Cox.

Lobo tight ends also put on a show for the fans. Mike Augustyniak made a leaping 30-yard reception that had the faithful cheering, and freshman Allex Alvarado caught two passes, including one for a touchdown from second-year quarterback Tye Butler.

The inexperienced crew of receivers also put on a good show. Chris Brawly had three receptions and looks to start the season opposite Hank Baskett.

Not to be outdone, the Lobo defensive unit made some big plays to show they can be as good as, or better than, their dominant unit last season.

Linebacker Mike Mohoric took an interception to the other endzone for a defensive score, and linebacker Chrishone Harris had two sacks.

Fola Fashola, who missed most of last season with a knee injury, was a welcome sight for some fans.

"It's good to see Fashola out there," said fan Bill Hammet, who attended the practice with his daughter and grandson. "I really think he is going to be a good player for us. I thought he would be good last year, so now it's good to see him out there and moving around."

The season kicks off Friday, Sept. 3 when Washington State comes to Albuquerque. The game will be televised on ESPN.
