Golf team takes first in Japan

The Lobo men's golf team started the season off on a high by winning the Topy Cup in Fukushima, Japan. After strong play in the event's first two rounds, the Lobos shot a third round 5-under par on the par 72 Tanagura Country Club. They finished the tournament 17-under.

Auburn was in second place and lost to UNM by three strokes.

Spencer Levin led the way for UNM in the final round with a 6-under-par 66. Levin was the overall leader after the first round, fell to third after the second, and finished at 11-under to win by four strokes. Senior Miguel Griego finished tied for third at 6-under, and sophomore Charlie Beljan also finished in the top 10 tied for eighth at 6-under par.

The other Lobos in the Topy Cup were senior Jay Reynolds and junior Mark Anderson. They both finished tied for 32nd at 7-over par.

The team has little time to regroup before heading out of town again. They'll compete in the Carpet Capital Classic in Dothan, Georgia starting on Sept. 17.
