The combination of fierce lyrics, clever motifs and tight instrumentation is part of what makes The New What Next a keeper.

"We really wanted to make a more dynamic record," bassist Jason Black said in a news release.

It seems they have done just that. The New What Next explores tunings and techniques previously unheard in other Hot Water Music records. This was an evolutionary project for the ensemble.

The band members demonstrate what they are really capable of, and their prowess is evident to the listener in the melancholy tones of "Ink and Lead," the powerful chords and elaborate riffs of "End of the Line" and the poignant lyrics of "Poison." This truly is punk at its best.

The band has its roots in Gainesville, Fla., and has been making music for roughly 10 years, though its career didn't take off until 2001 with the release of A Flight and a Crash.

Hot Water Music has managed, despite an ever-increasing fan base, to retain its unique sound and credibility. The New What Next exemplifies the force, drive and heart this group spills into every note. The album also demonstrates that it's possible for musicians to evolve without selling out or surrendering their style. Punk aficionados everywhere will love the album.

All in all, The New What Next is a sonic delight that will titillate all musical pallets.

Hot Water Music will be in Albuquerque Oct. 24 at the Launchpad.
