Tennis player comes up short against pro

Lobo women's tennis player Iva Gersic was ousted Wednesday from the ColemanVision Tennis Championships by 17-year-old, second-year pro Stephanie Dubois of Montreal.

The first set was a hard-fought battle Dubois, ranked No. 357 in the world, eventually won 7-6. Gersic didn't fare as well in the second set, succumbing to Dubois 6-3 to end the match.

Gersic, a sophomore at UNM and native of Croatia, came up just short in the $75,000 tournament after winning her first three matches to get to the main draw.

It is the furthest a Lobo has ever gone in the tournament.

After four strenuous matches, Gersic was still far from getting a break. She had to join her team for its season-opening match against Brigham Young on Thursday.

Goallkeeper named to national all-star team

Lobo senior goalkeeper Andrew Weber has been named to the Soccer America National Team of the Week.

Weber made nine saves in two games this weekend as the Lobos shut out both Columbia and No. 1 Indiana. His eight saves against Indiana were pivotal in securing a 1-0 double-overtime win for the Lobos.

The goalkeeper's stellar play last weekend helped the Lobos garner attention as a national powerhouse. UNM jumped in the national rankings from No. 14 to No. 7 in the Soccer America and National Soccer Coaches Association of America polls.

This is the second Lobo to be placed on the National Team of the Week - junior Jeff Rowland was named to the team after scoring five goals in the first weekend of play.

Weber was also named the Brine Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week.
