Men's golf takes first in tourney, sets UNM record
UNM won the 16-team Nelson Invitational in Stanford, Calif., this weekend with a dominating performance that can only improve the No. 3 Lobos' standing in the national rankings.
On the 6,444-yard, par-69 Stanford golf course, the Lobos shot a final-round 284 and finished the tournament at 830 - a school record for 54 holes. Second place UNLV finished five strokes back.
Junior Spencer Levin was first overall for his second tournament win of the year. His total score of 198 (65-65-68) was also a school record.
Jay Reynolds also played well for the Lobos, finishing fourth at par. Miguel Griego tied for 16th at five over, and Lobos Jay Choi and Charlie Beljan tied for 42nd.
UNM plays next on Nov. 5 at the Carpet Capital Classic, which was rescheduled from earlier this season. Levin will hit the links again for the United States at the World Amateur Championships in Puerto Rico on Friday.

Men's soccer ties SDSU 1-1 in double overtime
Despite outshooting the Aztecs 22-9 in their game at San Diego State, the No. 2 Lobo men's soccer team couldn't score when it mattered and tied SDSU 1-1 on Sunday in double overtime.
New Mexico was dominant in the first half, putting up nine shots compared to the Aztecs' one, but couldn't capitalize on those shots. Two hit the post, and two were just wide of the net.
UNM's Blake Danaher scored the game's first goal in the 77th minute when a corner kick deflected off two SDSU defenders, and he was able to put it in from 15 yards out.
SDSU tied the game with just 1:05 left in the second half when Heath Creader dribbled through the UNM defense and put the ball in the far side of the net from 12 yards away.
In overtime, neither team could put together an effective attack.
The Lobos' Mountain Pacific Sports Federation record fell to 5-1-1, while SDSU improved to 2-4-1.
Next up for UNM is a rematch Thursday against Denver, the only team to beat them this year.
