Lobos in 3rd place before snow delay

Staff Report

Poor weather conditions halted the New Mexico Invite in Taos and Red River this weekend. After six of eight events, UNM stands in third place overall behind Denver and Colorado.

The Nordic competition was the highlight of the meet for the Lobos. The women won their 5K freestyle race, and the men's second-place finish was their highest this year.

Men's alpine finished third in the slalom race.

Martina Stursova and Trine Lundamo were the top performers for UNM, taking the top two spots on both days. Stursova picked up her third win of the season. Pirkko Pulkkanen finished eighth.

The men had three racers finish in the top 10. Dirk Grimm finished in sixth place, Geir-Endre Rogn finished seventh, and Jedd Young was eighth.

It was a season high for each.

The Alpine teams were most affected by the weather. Heavy snow made for poor visibility, and the event was deemed too dangerous to continue by head coach George Brooks and the event's organizers.

The men's slalom races were held before the meet was cut short and UNM's Lars Loeseth took the No. 1 spot for his first career slalom win.

Petter Roering finished 10th for the Lobos, and the men's team placed third in the event overall.

UNM's 405 points put them 30 behind No. 1 Denver and just four behind second-place Colorado. The race will be capped at the NCAA West Regionals in Bozeman, Mont., on Feb. 25-26.

No makeup date has been set for the women's slalom race.
