Editor,
The most senior officer in the United States armed forces, Gen. Richard Myers, said Iraqi insurgents have lost none of their capacity to stage attacks. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said there were 50 to 60 attacks a day - the same level as one year ago.
According to government figures, terror attacks worldwide more than tripled last year, with much of the increase traced to incidents relating to Iraq.
Charles Duelfer, head of the Iraq Survey Group, said, "After more than 18 months, the WMD investigation and debriefing of the WMD-related detainees has been exhausted."
So let's get this straight. First, we have absolute proof that we were lied to about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction during the 2003 State of the Union presidential address.
Second, the Iraqi January elections notwithstanding, nothing has changed in Iraq when it comes to our children in the military being in harm's way.
Third, this Vietnam-type fiasco has increased worldwide terrorist attacks threefold.
Perhaps if George W. Bush, Republican House Majority Leader Tom DeLay and Republican Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist were less obsessed with evangelical sideshows they would pay more realistic attention to our country's national security.
