Letter: Columnist exaggerates Israel's sacrifice for peace

Editor,

In her guest column in Monday's Daily Lobo, Mandi Casey writes of Israel, "No country has ever been expected to give up so much to make peace."

For 1,000 years until 1948, this country was Palestine. In the last Camp David negotiations during President Clinton's administration, Israel made its final offer to return to the Palestinians 29 percent of historic Palestine.

I'm not sure that giving up 29 percent of one's occupied lands is the most any country has given up for peace.

Some 3,000 years ago, a young Hebrew named David aimed his slingshot at a Philistine named Goliath. A Greek historian renamed the Philistines the Palestinians. Today, Israel is the Goliath, and Palestinian youth have the slingshots.

If foreigners occupied New Mexico, we'd all become terrorists. That's what occupations do, no matter how enlightened. Occupations produce terrorists.

The Palestinians deserve more understanding than Mandi Casey offers them.
