Editor,
I used to think most Americans were good people who would resist a fascist military dictatorship, but I was wrong.
I read that, according to Human Rights Watch, some U.S. troops occupying Iraq break the legs of Iraqi prisoners with baseball bats for sport. Most Americans are so apathetic and desensitized to violence that they would support any bombing or genocide in the name of freedom. The military is refusing to comply with a court order to release photographs and videos of Iraqi women and children being raped by Iraqi soldiers.
Last weekend in Washington, D.C., more than 100,000 Americans protested the war in Iraq, while some 500 Americans nearby supported the war. These 500 call themselves the silent majority. They also accuse anyone who disagrees with the war as treasonous, traitorous and pro-terrorist. They say American troops are fighting for freedom, while Cindy Sheehan gets arrested for sitting down in front of our White House.
We are spending $5 billion a month in Iraq to get back $150 million worth of oil? Sept. 11, 2001, was the best thing that ever happened to the Bush regime, Republican and Democratic politicos and the military-industrial complex. Martial law is a pen stroke away, and I'm sure the majority of Americans will support it in the name of law and order.
Most Americans, when it comes down to it, are lazy cowards who deserve the government they have.
