Editor,
President Bush aimed for regime change, but he got climate change instead.
Iraq's current leaders seem poised to become as autocratic as the tyrant they replaced. It's hard to unscramble an egg.
But virtually every scientist whose mind is not for sale to the highest bidder agrees that climate change has now been achieved. The only question is how far it will proceed.
Four years ago in the chaos following the terrorist attacks, many New Yorkers discovered their feet, some walking miles to get home. In the wake of Katrina's caprice, will we Americans once again discover our feet? If we remain addicted to our motor vehicle habits, the oilmen in the White House will gleefully fuel our addiction. They'll even send our National Guard to fight Iraqis, so that when disaster strikes stateside, they are not around to perform their intended role.
Washington never leads. It takes its cues from the regime of its citizenry. If we Americans insist that feet are for pressing accelerators rather than pedals or pavement, we'll reap a future of oil wars and violent weather.
Can the ongoing climate change prompt a change in the regime of the United States' lifestyle? If it doesn't, there will be no one left to herald the next century.
