Editor,
I am writing in response to Mike Weber's disturbing letter in Wednesday's paper. I just returned from a two-week visit to Israel, a country that Weber has obviously never been to and I doubt ever will visit. In his letter, Weber writes that "if foreigners occupied New Mexico, we'd all become terrorists" suggesting that the murder of innocent people on their way to work or school is a legitimate form of political expression that we can all understand and sympathize with.
The stated goal of Hamas, Al Qaeda and other fascist Islamic groups is the murder of every Jew in the Middle East and then every Jew in existence. Weber may share this view - in America it is his right to have the opinion he chooses - but he does not speak for me when he says that I would resort to crimes against humanity to further my political objectives. Let me make this clear - I, like most people, support the idea of an independent Palestinian state.
But until the Palestinians renounce the terrorist forces within their own society, come up with a plan of self-government based on the rule of law and prepare to join the community of nations in a responsible way, they will forever have a babysitter named Israel and that's just what they will deserve.
