Letter: Bush-supporters blinded by their idea of patriotism

Editor,

This letter is in response to Rebekah Casey's letter in Monday's Daily Lobo, titled "Self-pitying liberals distort Bush's fight for democracy."

It would appear that Casey, like the 51 percent or so of the American people who voted for Bush, were and continue to be blinded by their red-white-and-blue version of patriotism, which explains why they voted for him in the first place. The content of her letter seems to imply that any American citizen who does not support Bush and his shenanigans is not a patriot.

She lauds Bush's efforts toˇforceˇaˇdemocratic form of governmentˇon theˇIraqi people, but can't see that our invasion of Iraq was unjustified. While some good will come out of our invasion of Iraq, it does not alter the fact that Bush lied to the American people, Congress and the United Nations in order to justify the unilateral invasion of Iraq. Once the occupation of Iraq was completed, neither weapons of mass destructionˇnor any direct links between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda were found.

In the end, more than 100,000 Iraqi citizens - military and civilians - most likely died due to the heavy bombing, and more than 1,900 American soldiers have died since. Casey and others like her should open their eyes and see matters for what they really are.

If the House of Representatives could find justification to impeach Clinton for his sexual indiscretions and nearly impeach Nixon for the Watergate break-in, how much more justification could they find in Bush's unjustified invasion of Iraq, whose consequences are among the worst and costliest - the deaths of thousands, the negative impact on our foreign relationsˇand the inordinate and unjustifiedˇexpenditure of taxpayers' funds for the reconstruction and security of Iraq.

I'm sorry, but it isˇthe voices of dissent against poor government thatˇare the true patriots and defenders of our democratic form of government and our liberties, rather than the blind support of a president and administrationˇwithout regard to how they perform and fulfill their responsibilities to the American people.
