Editor,
Recently, on one of my trips through campus, I picked up and read a brochure from the group Peer Mentoring for Graduates of Color. This appears to me to promote reverse discrimination.
The words "of Color" in the title is not only unnecessary, but conjures up the idea that those other than minorities need not apply. I am a color - the color white. However, my guess is that white is not the color inferred by this group.
Also, the majority of minorities do not like to be referred to as colored. I personally find this name to be offensive - wouldn't everyone be better off if it was just called Peer Mentoring for Graduates rather than inferring that some people are welcome and some are not?
I would strongly suggest this group take heart the quote in their brochure by Mahatma Gandhi, which reads, "We must become the change we want to see." If that is true, change our name to represent all people and leave race out of it.
