Letter: Confrontational preacher uses un-Biblical tactics

Editor,

I will agree with Matt Bourgault, who demonstrated outside the SUB on Wednesday, that evangelism is the responsibility of Christians, as commanded in the book of Matthew. And I agree that college campuses can be places of licentious parties and moral decay.

This is, however, a general statement and not intended to be associated with every individual student. If the allegations brought against Bourgault are true, then his approach to presenting the Gospel is unbiblical. This is purely conjectural, since those accusations have not yet been investigated.

As a result, my response is based on Bourgault doing what he is accused of doing. If Bourgault did state that women were only good for procreation, then he overlooks the women of the Bible like Esther, Ruth, Priscilla, Mary, Martha and many others who were instrumental in the nation of Israel and early Christianity.

The allegation that he spit upon a woman is also a poor representation of a follower of Jesus. Paul the Apostle, when confronted by the Corinthians, brought logical argument. Even when he was beaten, stoned, imprisoned and whipped, he continued to show genuine concern for the welfare of his antagonists.

Ultimately, if we choose to fling mud at people, we will lose ground and get all of us dirty. It ends up being a horrible experience for both parties. It is true that people in the name of Christianity have committed some horrible atrocities, yet just because a bottle is labeled water doesn't mean what's inside of it is water - neither does a nation or individual claiming to be a Christian mean they are truly Christian.
