Letter: Liberals bash Bush with nonsense, distorted facts

Editor,

This letter is in response to Nahum Castillo's letter in Thursday's Daily Lobo, titled "Bush supporters blinded by their idea of patriotism."

By calling Bush supporters blind, Castillo is demonstrating the hypocrisy that is a prerequisite to the liberal belief system. Unfortunately for the few who have legitimate protests, the vast majority of Bush bashers protest based on nonsense and distorted facts. I would bet he hasn't been to Iraq and bases his comments on what he has heard rather than anything he has seen.

Calling the invasion unjustified may be a matter of one's opinion, but to say that Iraq under Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with terrorism is plain ignorance. Just because the Sept 11, 2001, hijackers weren't Iraqi doesn't mean Iraq wasn't involved. Not only did Saddam financially support Palestinian suicide bombers, but terrorist networks did and do operate in Iraq. Last time I checked, the invasion was not unilateral either, and I met many British and Australian troops while I was there last year.

To cite the death toll as "more than 100,000 Iraqi citizens" is misleading, I believe. Aside from the exaggeration of the number itself, I think most of these deaths have not been caused by the United States or coalition forces, but by insurgents, who are, of course, Iraqis. Secondly, the United States is not fighting an organized military. Therefore, while the insurgents are lawful combatants under the laws of armed combat, they are still civilian casualties.

Perhaps Castillo will open his eyes before telling others to do the same. Regurgitating what you hear in the liberal media is nothing but blind belief in itself.
