Letter: Students at crosswalks oblivious to lines of cars

Editor,

Since my daughter started attending UNM, I have had the pleasure of dropping her off and picking her up in my car. During these brief treks on campus I have noticed a phenomenon I call crosswalk abuse.

Students seem to have the attitude that using a crosswalk is their God-given right, no matter how many cars are backed up at the crosswalk or how many or how few people are using the crosswalk at the same time.

The most abused crosswalk is on Redondo by the bookstore. Granted, there is a lot of foot traffic from Central Avenue into the campus and vice versa, so much so that I have seen a person directing traffic there. So this problem of crosswalk abuse has been addressed, but not all the time.

Students need to consider the crosswalk like a four-way stop - not a traffic signal stuck on green. Groups of people need to cross at the same time, then let a car pass by before the next group enters the crosswalk. If everyone would observe this simple rule, both foot and automobile traffic would flow more smoothly around campus.
