Letter: Anglo school mascots as offensive as others

Editor,

This letter is in response to University of Illinois at Urbana faculty member Stephen Kaufman's letter about NCAA colleges and universities having American-Indian mascots, which are racist or oppressive in some way, shape or form.

I would like to join Kaufman and add to his claim. I would like to ask UNM faculty members and students to establish a policy to preclude our athletic institutions from competing with any school that has an Anglo mascot. I find this offensive, being an Anglo myself. There are far too many schools with these Anglo mascots, and I believe it to be wrong to support these schools until they change their mascots to non-Anglo mascots.

An example is our state's own NMSU Aggies, with "Pistol Pete," and recently the more politically-correct "Lasso Pete." The support of UNM would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Peter Gentry
