Editor,
It was truly heartening to see the way members of our University community opened their hearts and homes to those displaced by the recent hurricanes.
As the evacuation of New Orleans and other areas hardest hit came to a close, our nation and our local community faced a new and immediate challenge - helping evacuees assimilate to their new communities.
Many of the nonprofit agencies supported by the United Way Community Fund have met this challenge, helping with everything from child care to job placement, from rental assistance to furnishing apartments.
Meeting this need has strained existing resources, making the University community's support of the United Way Community Fund even more important.
When so many members of our University community have supported national relief efforts, it is difficult to suggest that we give more, but in this time of great need we must do just that.

It is time to give more and to give locally so that our New Mexico charities can continue to serve the most vulnerable members of our community, including those displaced by the hurricanes.
