Empower women through education, love, respect

Editor,

The "Abortion is the greatest threat to women's liberation" letter in Tuesday's Daily Lobo is a total farce, a sham - a Three Card Monty hiding as support for woman.

Comparing how India and China use abortion to America is silly at best, outright fraud at worse. You decide what the author's intent was. Just remember that decisions on abortion in this country will have zero effect on India or China.

As much as the right-to-life people hate former President Clinton, he had it correct when he stated that abortion should be "safe, legal and rare." If you want to help women, don't limit their freedoms and decisions about their bodies, making them second-class citizens with fewer rights than men.

If you want to help women and decrease abortions, work to get better birth control and work to improve education about pregnancy and safe sex. If you want to help women, make mandatory jail sentences for date rape and for the possession of date rape drugs.

I believe the right-to-life people love their mothers and wives and daughters. The difference is that I love and respect my mother, my wife and my two wonderful daughters. I respect them enough to know they will make decisions in their lives based on their beliefs, their emotional, physical and mental well-being. And I love them enough to stand by them and help them in whatever decisions they make.

My mother is too old now to worry about this, but for my wife and daughters, I hope they never have to worry about having an abortion. I hope that when - or even if - they ever get pregnant, it is a wonderful thing. But I want them, as equals, to always have that option for them so they can make their decision.

If you truly want to empower women, don't take away their rights and freedoms. Instead educate, love and respect them - that is where their true power and equality will come from.
