Editor,
Wednesday's events force us to consider the qualities that we want the next UNM president to possess.
As a university, UNM primarily sells one product: an education for students. I feel that our next president needs to possess an academic focus and, inherently, a student focus as well.
President Caldera did many great things for UNM at large, but he was only minimally involved with the students who give purpose to this great University. One possible cause of this was that students were not as involved in the presidential search process as they could have been.
A UNM president should be the champion of academic success through engagement with students. I implore the UNM regents to ensure that students are involved in every aspect of the presidential search process. However, it is also up to us, the students, to take the necessary action to ensure this happens.
