Letter: Respect is important during a heated debate

Respect is the key to taking one's point of view and making it a valid one.

When we talk about heated issues such as racism, abortion, gay rights and so on, we have a problem with attacking one another personally for our views.

You cannot go and insult someone for his or her views - once you do that, you lose any credibility with them, and it will also persuade them to do the same to you.

We come to learn in college to better ourselves, but when we take shots at others for their views on things, we show ignorance that is unbecoming of our community.
