The UNM ski team fell short of its second NCAA Championship on March 12, coming in second behind the University of Colorado.
The Lobos won the championship in 2004 to give UNM its first national title in any sport. Colorado won the 2006 championships with 654 points. The Lobos were next with 556.
Denver University rounded out the top three with 537.5 points.
Freshman Tor Fodnesbergene came in third place in the slalom for UNM. He was the highest finisher for the Lobos in the championships. Junior Alex Mach came in seventh for UNM in the men's slalom, while classmate Lars Loseth finished 13th.

In the women's slalom, the Lobos were led by freshman Karin Ohlin's fifth-place finish. Ohlin was followed by senior Kathrin Spendier's 11th-place finish. Sophomore Amy Beresford also scored points for UNM, coming in 13th place.
On the men's Nordic side, senior Geir Endre Rogn placed 14th overall. Jedd Young was the next finisher for the Lobos at 18th place, while Dirk Grimm, who had won three races during the 2006 season, came in 22nd.
Sophomore Marit Rognmo finished seventh overall, followed by sophomore Laura Van Alst's 10th-place finish.
Freshman Crystin Jacques finished 23rd for the Lobos.
Other than the national championship in 2004, it was the Lobos' best finish since they took second place in 1992.
