Editor,
In light of the ongoing battle between creationism and evolution, I feel the need to express my thoughts on this heated subject.
First off, I have met plenty of creationists - some were even good friends whom I considered intelligent. But as someone who believes strongly in science and progress, I must say I disapprove of creationists' efforts to impose their narrow-minded world view upon everybody.
In trying to push their outdated, literalist interpretation of the Bible into science classrooms, they are crossing the line between church and state and setting back the human race from five centuries of scientific enlightenment.
In my view, the creationist movement is only an ongoing resistance by simple-minded people seeking to battle against any idea or theory that goes against their literal interpretation of scripture. There is even a Flat Earth Society that refuses to accept that the Earth is round because it goes against their religious beliefs. Are we going to teach this theory in the science classroom as well?
For such reasons, I believe the courts must continue to halt any efforts on the part of those who would advocate teaching creationist science alongside evolution in class or any similar attempts on the part of those wishing to impose religious dogma in our schools and universities.
