Letter: Scholarships compensate for increasing tuition costs

Editor,

UNM isn't the only New Mexican university to increase tuition - New Mexico State University, New Mexico Tech, Eastern New Mexico University and Western New Mexico University also increased their tuition rates. Even Albuquerque's Technical Vocational Institute raised tuition.

Compared to other universities, UNM is still a bargain - private colleges are in the five-digit cost range. The cost of attending Albuquerque Academy is more expensive than tuition at UNM.

Also, as every New Mexican student knows, there is something called the New Mexico Lottery Success Scholarship, which provides a free education for every New Mexico high school graduate who chooses to attend a state university immediately upon graduating high school.

One can even attend a New Mexico community college and obtain a Bridge to Success Scholarship to attend a state university to continue toward attaining a bachelor's degree.

The only requirement is that the student must take 12 credit hours and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 - how easy is that?
