Lobos leave game to catch plane

Staff Report

With one inning to go, the UNM baseball team's game with the Utah Utes was suspended Sunday because both teams had to catch planes.

It's a good thing for the Lobos, who were losing 11-4 in the Mountain West Conference Preseason Tournament game in San Diego, Calif.

The teams will play the one inning that's left before their game on April 21 at Isotopes Park.

The top of the fifth inning doomed the Lobos, as the Utes scored five runs to put the game out of reach.

Relief pitcher Tim Sloan came in for starting pitcher Chace Lankford in the fifth, and the Utes tagged him for six hits in the top of the inning.

Zach Arnett hit 2-for-3 in the game for the Lobos, and Brandon Bingham went 2-for-4. No other Lobo had more than one hit in the game.

UNM didn't score a run until the third inning of the game when Jordan Pacheco drove in Arnett with a single to right field.

Ryan Barba scored in the same inning when Chris Carlson singled to left field. With only one out and two men on base, the Lobos had an opportunity to put more runs on the board, but Matt Foote grounded into a double play to end the inning.

UNM will play at home Tuesday at 6 p.m. against the Albuquerque Isotopes at Isotopes Park.
