Singles play saves UNM

Behind solid singles play, the UNM men's tennis team ousted rival New Mexico State University 6-1 on Saturday.

With the win, No. 67 UNM improves to 9-4 on the season, and 84-9 all-time against NMSU.

The Aggies stole the doubles point from UNM, highlighted by the No. 1 doubles slot. NMSU's Brice Maganou and Stjepan Beg upset the No. 40 UNM duo of Max Jones and Kamil Pajkowski, 8-6.

The Lobos' No. 2 doubles duo of Johnny Parkes and Miles Bugby also lost, falling 8-5 to Tim America and Roman Stoisavljevic of NMSU. UNM's Eric Conklin and Graeme Kassautzki won the No. 3 doubles slot 8-2 against Christian Halligan and Jeff Pfeifer, but the first two matches assured NMSU the doubles point.

The Lobos came back with a vengeance for the singles matches, sweeping all 12 sets from the Aggies. Parkes handled Maganou of NMSU 6-4, 6-2. The victory is Parkes' third straight since being put at the Lobos No. 1 singles position.

In the No. 2 spot, Jones defeated the Aggies' Beg, 7-5, 6-3. Jones improves his record to 8-5 overall on the season.

Kassautzki took care of Stoisavljevic at the No. 3 position, earning the victory 6-3, 6-4. Pajkowski had little trouble with No. 4 America, winning 6-2, 6-2. Conklin beat Halligan 6-4, 6-0 at the five spot and Chandler Brass completed the singles sweep by handling Pfeifer 6-2, 7-6.
