Letter: Cutting off Palestinian aid continues cycle of violence

Editor,

Obviously, David Holcberg is either misinformed or a strong proponent of a racist ideology that seemingly embraces the right of the privileged and powerful to impose their will onto those deemed weaker - or perhaps inferior.

Indeed, in his letter in the April 18 issue of the Daily Lobo, Holcberg does not hesitate to condemn the Palestinian people to endure even more suffering because they dared to set their own terms for justice after years of being pushed into a path contrary to their best interests. This standpoint precludes the possibility of supporting the development of good governance in Palestine and pursuing a means of ending the bloodshed. Sadly, Holcberg rallies behind the United States' and European Union's decision to impose collective punishment on the Palestinian people for exercising their right to choose their parliamentary representatives. At the same time, he fails to mention Israel's 58 years of expulsion, land expropriations, targeted assassinations, systematic torture of political prisoners, the denial of human rights with impunity from such enlightened democracies as the United States, Canada and Europe.

So frequently we hear how the Palestinians have missed yet another opportunity for peace. I believe the recent aid cuts imposed by Israel, Canada, the European Union and United States reveal the true perpetrators of the cycle of violence.
