Editor,
I'm not a big fan of television, and I didn't watch the Emmys on Sunday. However, in addition to the awards show itself and all the red carpet nonsense, there appears to be quite a few people angered at the broadcasting of the opening skit.
In a parody of ABC's "Lost," Conan O'Brien boarded a private jet for Los Angeles that ended up crashing on a deserted island. Earlier that day, Flight 5191 out of Lexington, Ky., crashed, killing 49 of the 50 people on board.
Tim Gilbert, general manager of Lexington's NBC affiliate, WLEX, was reportedly horrified and stunned at the skit, claiming ignorance and incompetence on the part of NBC for showing it. He plans to ask NBC for an apology.
Why should NBC apologize? They did nothing wrong. A fatal plane crash occurs and several hours later a parody of a popular TV show, which happens to have a plane crash, is broadcasted. People like Gilbert are up in arms about it and want you to believe that being politically correct and as inoffensive as possible are the important issues that need to be faced in our society. The few level-headed Americans still out there know this is not true.
It is no wonder that most of the world looks at the United States in a negative light. But I still love her. Thank God we have leaders willing to take action, because nothing would ever get done if we had to wait for the general public to sort through the rubbish.
