Letter: People should have right to vote 'none of the above'

Editor,

The current Daily Lobo poll question asking what the most important issue is in the contest between Attorney General Patricia Madrid and Rep. Heather Wilson totally misses the mark.

Wilson has failed to do her sworn duty as a member of Congress to uphold the U.S. Constitution. She has sided with her party and failed to support impeachment proceedings in the face of numerous, publicly admitted violations of law - both high crimes and misdemeanors - by the president and the vice president.

Madrid suffers from the same lack of a sense of duty. When asked if Madrid would fulfill her sworn duty as a member of Congress, Heather Brewer, Madrid's campaign communication director replied, "The attorney general feels that calls for impeachment are premature."

So, it appears that neither candidate takes the Constitution or the oath to protect and defend it seriously. It is therefore time for legislation that will do two things: require all eligible citizens to vote, and always provide voters with the choice to vote "none of the above." In any election, if "none of the above" wins, the parties will be required by law to put forward new candidates that the voters actually consider qualified to hold office.
