Editor,
In spite of himself, Brian Fejer did have a good idea about Sept. 11, 2001, in his letter in Tuesday's Daily Lobo.
It's time we as Americans do something besides maintain a quiet, one-hour vigil once a year. However, I do not agree with Fejer's protest ideas. Something I learned from the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. years ago was that protests don't go far enough. One must make other changes.
Protesting is a lazy way to make your opinion known. When you protest, you get someone's attention temporarily, and you get someone else to do the hard work. Just a handful of people cannot change a world. Instead of protesting, try getting involved with organizations that get things done, such as ASUNM, NAACP, College Republicans or College Democrats.
Students were very eager to vote prior to the last general election - or at least eager to register to vote. Unfortunately, registering is the easy part. Very few college students voted. Most didn't because of a multitude of excuses. If you don't vote, your government representatives won't listen to you. Right or wrong, that is a hard fact of life.
Try volunteering to help those in need. Ditching classes for a week or work for a month is not the answer - the individual is the only one who gets hurt. Try something more constructive.
