Column: College football provides excitement, lots of action

by Andre van der Merwe

Daily Lobo

There is nothing like college football.

Few sports can match its competitiveness, but none can match its excitement. Where else are you going to find 22 people duking it out - and I don't mean literally, University of Miami - for potentially millions of dollars, if they make it to the NFL?

Where else are you going to find such high testosterone levels, other than California's Governator on Election Day?

A fraternity house, maybe. The House of Representatives, possibly. A prison - OK, you got me, but we can't show sodomy on television.

So where are you going to find G-rated action, excitement and no concern for bodily harm on television? No other place than college football.

And, if the prison scene is what you wanted, look no further than a Miami vs. Florida International game.

Or, if you're really that desperate to find something along those lines, you could always just Google Marcus Vick. You won't be disappointed.

What? You're not into college football? You prefer the NFL?

Oh, really? The same NFL that silenced your favorite receiver and mine, Chad Johnson? The same NFL that fines players more money for celebrating than using an illegal block that ends another player's season?

Maybe you weren't into college football, but here are a few things that might spark your interest. Just imagine two undefeated teams - most likely - facing off for the national championship.

The title on the line, one game left. If you have any hopes of being one of those teams you have to be near perfect. Lose one game and consider yourself out of the running.

Like the famous words of NASCAR driver Ricky Bobby, "If you ain't first, you're last."

This year, there is a threat in the arms and legs of Ohio State's Troy Smith. Smith can be found near the top of the Heisman watch just about anywhere on the Internet.

Another explosive quarterback and field general you can easily look forward to is West Virginia's Pat White. Lethal through the air just as much as he is on the ground, White has had up to 220 yards passing in a game and as much as 250 yards on the ground this season.

Watching White play is more action-packed than a night with Paris Hilton on ecstasy.

However, if you want to see the next-generation quarterback guaranteed to break college and NFL records alike, set your sights on Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm. Just to give you a little background on your future hero, let us have a look at Brohm's accomplishments in the past.

Brohm threw for 10,579 yards and 119 touchdowns at Trinity High School and was named USA Today Offensive Player of the Year and the Gatorade Player of the Year in Kentucky.

He finished second in Kentucky state history in career passing yards and career touchdowns and set a state record for career completion percentage.

In Brohm's final high school game, he completed 19 of 25 passes for 552 yards and seven touchdowns.

In his high school career, he completed 226 of 335 passes and threw just one interception. It is apparent that Brohm shares the same hatred for throwing interceptions that Philly fans have for T.O.

In his collegiate career, he has thrown 399 times with only seven interceptions. Now, if that doesn't provide enough excitement or amazement, then I don't know what will.
