The No. 5 seed West Virginia Mountaineers squeezed passed the No. 12 seed Lobos 61-60 at The Pit in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament. The Lobos had trouble containing the Mountaineers' offensive threats, UNM head coach Don Flanagan said. "They are very difficult to defend and have a lot of weapons," he said.

Lobo defense key to victory

LAS VEGAS - The UNM women's basketball team showed again Wednesday that its defense can give it a chance to win any game. The Lobos beat No. 5 seed BYU 59-41 in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament. Thanks to teamwork on defense, the Lobos held the Cougars to just 17 first half points.

The UNM men's basketball team used a stout defense to knock off UNLV 59-45 on Tuesday at The Pit. The sold-out crowd of 18,018 - the second consecutive sold-out game - made it an emotional win on Senior Night, senior guard Jamaal Smith said. "For our crowd to come out this year and support us like they have is just incredible," he said.

Tournament bid could hinge on UNLV game

The UNM men's basketball team has a chance to make a statement before entering the Mountain West Conference Tournament when it faces UNLV on Tuesday at The Pit. In the first meeting this season, the Rebels beat the Lobos 79-60 at the Thomas and Mack Center, which is hosting the MWC Tournament for its second consecutive year.

The UNM men's basketball team let No. 25 BYU slip through its fingers 70-69 in overtime Tuesday at The Pit. Letting BYU off the hook in the closing seconds of the game is going to sting for a while, Lobo forward J.R. Giddens said. "When you have a tough game like this that you lose, it's going to hurt," he said.

The UNM women's basketball team had No. 18 Utah on the ropes but faltered in the closing minutes, falling 57-53 on Saturday at The Pit. The defeat marked the second time this season that the Lobos held a double-digit lead against Utah. UNM dropped a 60-57 road game at Utah on Jan.

UNM wins in blowout against Cowboys

UNM forced Wyoming to commit costly errors en route to a 45-point win Saturday at The Pit. The Lobos scored 38 points off of Wyoming's 23 turnovers and won 100-55. UNM head coach Steve Alford said Saturday's performance was as good as it gets. "Needless to say, I don't know if we can play much better," he said.

Lobos collapse 41-38 against BYU at The Pit

The UNM women's basketball team fell 41-38 to BYU on Saturday at The Pit in perhaps its worst offensive performance of the season. The Lobos shot 16.7 percent from the field in the second half and were outrebounded 49-30. UNM head coach Don Flanagan said poor shooting will happen, but he was disappointed with the team's effort in getting rebounds.
