Editor,
There are now automated cameras to catch drivers running red lights and speeding throughout Albuquerque. Some have complained that this is unfair, because we all expect to break the law without penalty unless an officer is present.
Let's get real. We all know speeding is against the law, and we all know running a red light is against the law. Albuquerque is not in the wrong for using cameras to catch us breaking the law. People who speed and run red lights are in the wrong for breaking the law.
I thought we all learned that there are consequences to bad behavior when we were in nursery school, but I guess not. Apparently I was in the follow-the-rules class, while some of my fellow students were in the follow-the-rules-only-when-a-police-officer-is-watching class. I commend the Albuquerque Police
Department for finding a reliable way to reduce traffic violations and increase revenue for public safety without further taxing our police force's limited resources.
My only suggestion to APD is that it installs a camera at the intersection of University and Lomas boulevards to catch the dozens of cars that threaten the lives of students and employees by turning into the crosswalk while we're trying to cross the street.
