Letter: Dissent not a problem if done in respectful way

Editor,

The actions of Robert Anderson illustrate just how far some liberals will go to publicize themselves and disrupt lawful gatherings of anyone holding opposing viewpoints.

The symposium at which Anderson decided to make a fool out of himself was not a forum for debate. It was intended to be a venue at which scientists could present and discuss their research. To have a professor from Central New Mexico Community College disrupt the proceedings was an embarrassment to UNM, students, faculty and staff.

If Anderson truly wanted to get his point across, he could have petitioned the University and held a separate meeting, complete with guest speakers who agreed with him. If the University refused to comply, he then could have conducted a protest in an appropriate and respectful manner, or he could have written one of his many letters to the editor of this paper to spew his views.

It is discouraging that one with such poor judgment is teaching young people from a position of authority. Would supporters of Anderson still support him if he were a Bible-thumper breaking in and protesting a symposium on evolutionary psychology theory or a right-to-lifer protesting a medical symposium on the latest and safest abortion techniques? Liberals pick and choose their indignation. What are we going to do next, start burning books that the liberals don't agree with?

Regardless of whether or not you agree with it, in this country everyone has a right to express his or her opinion. Even noncitizens' opinions are respected here. I respect the right of this paper to print the things that it does. There is nothing wrong with a bunch of college students getting together as friends and colleagues and writing a left-handed paper. I do miss the days when it was more ambidextrous.

I wish everybody would pick up the Daily Lobo when they got off the shuttle as they used to, rather than pass it by like they do now. I will defend the right of people to express their opinions, but unlike Anderson, I won't insist they have to agree with mine.
