Caleb Fort's reporting is usually extremely solid. But I was stunned with disbelief to read this sentence in Fort's Daily Lobo article on Friday: "Madrid said the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan impact U.S. students. The money spent on the wars could be spent on improving financial aid," she said.
If any military actions in U.S. history were completely justified, they were the war with Japan
after Pearl Harbor and the war in Afghanistan after Sept. 11, 2001.
I would definitely vote for Rep. Heather Wilson if Attorney General Patricia Madrid opposed the U.S. military action to take down the Taliban and root out al-Qaida in Afghanistan in 2001. And I'd vote for Wilson if Madrid did not think the U.S. military should continue to bolster Hamid Karzai's government in Afghanistan now.
If quoted accurately by the Lobo, I would certainly hope that Madrid would further explain herself. She should be clear about her stance on Afghanistan and

whether or not she is a pacifist.
If Fort did not paraphrase Madrid's statement accurately, I would hope that the Lobo would immediately correct or clarify the statement. Some of us are still trying to make up our minds about who to vote for, and accuracy is important.
