Editor,
I am writing in response to Deanna Delgado's letter in Monday's Daily Lobo about the volunteer who asked her boyfriend if he wanted to register to vote. While I agree that the volunteer's comment was unprofessional, I don't think it was completely unfounded.
As a voter registration agent, I understand the volunteer's frustration when dealing with people who express complete disregard for the voting process. It is understandable - but not respectable - when one does not vote because one has no real political opinions and is oblivious to the political climate. But when left-wingers like Delgado, who have strong opinions about the government, decide not to vote, it is not understandable or respectable.
Citizens like her are the first ones to complain about and criticize the government, but they are the last ones to act. If one doesn't support a political system that one feels is a "corrupt mockery of democracy" and refuses to actually do anything to change it, one should not complain about it. To not vote is regressive and apathetic. Even if one feels no candidates adequately represent him or her, one should still choose the lesser evil.
If Delgado and her boyfriend really think the government is a corrupt and inept entity and refuse to do anything about it, maybe they really should move to a country that would better suit their ideologies. They may not be uninformed, but the information they possess is useless if they refuse to do anything with it.
Delgado says she is changing the world in her own ways. She can "fight the system," wear unique clothes and listen to indie music all she wants, but she won't actually be doing anything progressive, unlike the volunteer who approached her boyfriend.
