Letter: Protest should have been covered by student paper

Editor,

I was appalled at the coverage of the demonstration for justice that took place Thursday. Before the protest, I saw no announcement in your newspaper that it was to occur, though I do know you were notified. The photograph you showed was not at all representative of the diverse crowd of people that participated. Not only were most of them not sitting, but the estimated 200 people that marched from University Boulevard and Central Avenue to the U.S. Federal Building on Gold Avenue ranged in age from 2 to 85.

Your brief caption also did not fully portray the feeling or purpose of the event. It was not a protest against Bush - it was a stand against the repeal of habeas corpus, the rape and torture of innocent people, the planned killings of Iraqi children, nuclear proliferation and a blatant disregard for American morals and standings in a global community. Why was there no article? Why was there no mention of the impassioned speakers who were speaking on UNM campus? Why were there no interviews with the various community representatives present? Why was there no mention of the constant stream of passersby showing their support? When will you truly be the independent voice of UNM?
