Letter: Sidewalk slander at UNM sends wrong messages

Editor,

I was casually walking back to the building where I work on campus after enjoying the cool weather and having lunch, when I saw the words "Heather the war whore" written with chalk on the sidewalk. Generally disgusted with political slander already, I proceeded to look up to a class of school-aged children playing near one of the water fountains here on campus.

I am a full believer in the freedom of speech, but I think the people who write these things on the sidewalk should realize that there are other people on this campus - namely children - who should not be subjected to words such as "whore" when they are here for an educational experience. I would rather see an entire essay about how a candidate is not equipped to participate in the governing of our country written on the sidewalk than mindless, uneducated slander that helps no one in the decision-making process and sends bad messages to youngsters who may be prospective students in the future as well.
