Editor,
First, I'd like to say that I think the Daily Lobo is usually a great way for the UNM community to get its news. However, Monday's issue made it clear that it presents a one-sided view of certain issues. For example, Greek life on campus.
The rape charges made front page, yet homecoming wasn't even mentioned. It seems only the negative aspects of fraternities and sororities are presented. Greeks are very actively involved, both on campus and in the community. Three out of six members of homecoming court were Greeks, including the elected queen. Also, this weekend both the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic had members volunteering at the Balloon Fiesta to raise money for their chosen charities, but notice that none of these things were mentioned.
I find it ridiculous that the Daily Lobo seems so hell-bent on making Greeks have such a negative image. We make up the majority of participants in homecoming week, we constantly have events to raise money for a variety of causes, and our members are involved in other organizations throughout campus.
As a member of the Greek community, I can't understand why every mistake made is front-page news, but the many contributions we make aren't worth mentioning. I think you seriously need to reconsider the balance presented in your paper, because right now, it is completely biased, which is a mark of bad journalism. I understand that scandal is interesting, but your attempt to write an interesting paper is hindering your ability to write an informative paper.
Greek life doesn't deserve a bad reputation, and your paper is propagating a negative image. Please be responsible journalists and reconsider the biased opinion you present of Greeks.
