Editor,
I think it would be nice if the Daily Lobo published the number of participants during this year's homecoming elections, just to compare it to the number of students that voted during the last elections for mayor and president. I am sure many of us would be impressed with the results.
In the last three years, I have seen more people participating in the election of UNM's king and queen than in real elections for president, Congress or city government. I think that having fun is good at any age, but as we get older, we have to perform some duties that are important for the community and ourselves. Sometimes we have to accept that we have to spend more time on serious issues, such as elections, weapons development at UNM and
poverty. If this country intends to be an example of democracy, people have to participate in its daily construction and make use of its legal tools to keep a healthy democracy.
Students should vote in the elections on Nov. 7, and show that they can play the homecoming game and also be mature enough to participate in the democratic life of this country.
