Editor,
As a commuter student who takes the shuttle from Zia Lot every day, I was distressed to hear that parking and transportation services decided to close Zia Lot starting Monday.
Parking is a huge issue here at UNM, and I shudder to think of the overcrowding and inefficiency that will result from eliminating 500 to 600 parking spots in an already bloated and overcrowded parking system.
As a student with a job and a life, I have to be able to get on and off campus efficiently. It makes me nervous to think of the already large crowds at South Lot doubling in size, and me, a single student trying to get on the bus amid that throng of humanity. Making 100 G Lot permits available for those kicked out of Zia Lot is a start, but the South Lot is still going to be packed to the gills.
If you're like me and you are worried about Zia Lot closing, then I suggest e-mailing the Department of Parking and Transportation Services at parktran@unm.edu and voicing your concern.
