Editor,
In her letter in Monday's Daily Lobo, Jenna Hall urged us to think of ourselves as global citizens. She also called for an immediate withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.
As global citizens, it would be extremely reckless to immediately withdraw all our troops. The consequences of it would send Iraq into a chaotic state. Presently, the Iraqi government is not capable of maintaining order, and the situation would go from bad to worse if the United States left.
Conceding our mistakes in Iraq, we must go forward from this point rather than dwell on the mistakes of the Bush administration, including Donald Rumsfeld - who wasn't fired, as Hall asserted, but resigned instead. If anything, we owe it to the Iraqi people to help out in any way possible. While a change in strategy is in order, abandoning them in dangerous times would be a slap in the face that would result in continuing violence, and would likely contribute to the destabilization of the region.
