Drivers on campus should slow down for pedestrians

Editor,

I recently came to visit a friend who is a student at UNM. She lives in the dorms. I am considering coming to school here, but I had a concern when I was crossing the street at the crosswalk.

As my friend and I were heading toward Alvarado Hall, I noticed that people driving on Redondo Road do not obey the speed limit, especially in the crosswalk. There were people blazing by in their vehicles, not caring whether there were pedestrians or not.

When my friend and I approached the crosswalk from the La Posada parking lot, we were not allowed to cross the street, because a person driving a car did not care to stop. It is absolutely crazy how people pretend not to know that pedestrians have the right of way. Everyone is an adult here. People should start acting their ages and stop being so

careless.

I think it would be great if speeding cameras were set up, or if campus police could set something up to monitor speed. The camera could get license plate numbers so the person driving could get some sort of fine. That way, maybe the careless drivers would let pedestrians have the right of way.

It is a hazard to have people driving and not taking any kind of precaution. What if they hit someone? As I see it, this is unacceptable.
