Editor,
In the Nov. 10 Daily Lobo, I read a letter by UNM student John Ralph about insufficient funds for the fine arts. Even though math and science are essential to modern society, I believe that we would live in a very dull world were it not for the fine arts.
When I was in high school, I learned how to play the violin. It was a very fun experience to play this unique instrument. Playing this instrument gave me a newfound appreciation for classical music, especially for the melodies of Antonio Vivaldi. His music has the powerful ability to paint a vivid landscape in the listener's mind. For instance, the "Winter" excerpt is reminiscent of a snowy, icy
landscape.
Being involved in a music program helped me do well in my classes, because classical music has an organizational effect on the mind. Music programs are a great way to develop the human mind. My point is that if the fine arts are underfunded, they probably deserve more attention than they are receiving.
