Remember victims of hate and intolerance

Editor,

Almost all the communities I have learned about through my studies at UNM have a way to honor loved ones who have passed on from this world. Some of these communities mourn their loved ones each year through special feast days. But what about those lost through our lack of tolerance and hate?

The Transgender Day of Remembrance, Nov. 20, is an important day that I have added to my calendar in support of transgender men and women. The first memorial was held in 1999 to honor the death of Rita Hester, a transgender woman murdered in 1998 in Boston. Her death put into action a Web project called Remembering our Dead. Through this Web project, communities around the world gather to mourn men and women who have lost their lives through murder, rape and torture because they are transgender or transitioning. Many of these crimes against humanity go unsolved to this day.

My heart goes out to the families who have lost loved ones due to injustice and fear. If our world had just a little more tolerance, maybe we would be able to celebrate our differences instead of mourning our losses.
