Editor,
Eric Garcia's cartoon in the Dec. 7 Daily Lobo about Uncle Sam supplying very little education funds to minorities is inaccurate. About 40 students from the Hispanic Engineering and Science Organization recently attended the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists national conference in Houston, where numerous awards and scholarships were awarded to outstanding Hispanic students. While there, I noticed that four of us were awarded scholarships of $1,500 or more. Many other Hispanic college students from all over the U.S. received scholarships during this conference as well. I'm very happy to say that we represented UNM honorably in Houston, and we will do it again next year.
I'm also very thankful to the National Science Foundation for the generous scholarship that I received from it. Without its financial support, I would not be able to attend college right now. Due to all the financial awards that I've received throughout my collegiate life, I haven't paid a single penny to attend college. All my expenses were completely covered, and for that, I'm deeply grateful.
