ASUNM Facebook page lacking professionalism

Editor,

I am writing as a concerned student of UNM. As I'm sure many people were, I was on Facebook last night, talking to friends and checking out groups and people's profiles. I stumbled upon ASUNM's Facebook group. I thought it would be cool to see who was in ASUNM and what sort of issues it was working on this year. Instead, the group came across as being very elitist and said nothing about what it was working on or how to get involved.

The worst part was the motto on the group's page, "Real money, fake government." I was shocked, and I hope it doesn't mean what I think it does. As a UNM student, part of that money is mine. According to our student fee breakdown, ASUNM gets $20 a semester from each student. Essentially, ASUNM is dealing with hundreds of thousands of dollars of students' money. I'm positive that the money is real, but I'm not too sure what "fake government" means.

I hope there is some democratic process that decides what happens with the money students pay ASUNM. It seems very irresponsible and raises an eyebrow on this student's face that the undergraduate student government would advertise itself this way on a public Web site. My suggestion to the group would be to get its act together and portray a sense of professionalism before a bunch of angry students start asking where their money is going. If you don't believe me, check it out for yourself at Unm.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2200280178.
